Competency Assurances

Each and every person within a successful organisation has a set of roles and responsibilities which are intended to function in an integrated fashion as a successful whole. Given that it is only through a truly competent workforce that the business goals of an organisation can be achieved, competency assurance is therefore critical to a company’s long term success. Competency itself can be deemed a combination of:

  • possessing the underpinning knowledge to perform a task
  • having the necessary skills to complete a task
  • possessing the necessary work ethics and personal attributes, such as attitude, when engaged in any given task

A competency assurance review is where an organisation looks at conditions that may arise during its day to day business activities with a view to identifying any required improvements to make its workforce more productive and efficient. DEFT can help clients in both attaining and maintaining a competent workforce through:

Competency Assurance Programmes

DEFT purpose-builds suitable competency assurance programme s specific to the requirements of each client. After completing a formal task analysis, DEFT develops a roadmap for each designated job function and integrates the sum of these into an organisational whole. The Competency Assurance Programme then standardises the required competencies for each employee within the specific roles within the client’s organisation. The Competency Assurance Programme provides the framework for the subsequent design and implementation of the client’s training and development programmes.

Train the Assessor

In order to allow clients to become autonomous in the management of its workforce’s competency programme, DEFT provides selected client employees with the required knowledge, skills and tools so as to enable them to become workplace assessors. Having in-house assessors is preferable in the longer term so as to provide continuity in the interpretation of what are familiar w work environment, policies and procedures. It is also true that the assurance of an employee’s competency is best determined in their regular workplace; where assessments occur in ‘real time' helping to avoid additional costs and disruption to day to day business activities.

Train the Mentor

DEFT initially provides clients with on site mentors but over the long terms recommend that selected client employees are provided with the required knowledge, skills and tools to become effective workplace mentors. This has the effect of maximising the benefits of OJT training programmes.

Supply of Workplace Assessors

DEFT provides workplace assessors as part of its manpower services commitment to client organisations. Many DEFT personnel are multi-disciplined and are able to complete workplace assessment in addition to other services such as OJT mentoring and/or training instruction.

Competency Assurance Audits

DEFT provides ongoing resources where clients can request regular or ad hoc audits of competency assurance programme mes. Audits are critical to the success of any competency system, so as to ensure that identified skill gaps have been closed and desired standards are being maintained over the long term. An external auditor is of critical importance to the audit process so as to glean objective feedback in addition to leveraging off lessons learned by other, similar organisations.
